Newport Corries AFC Documentary Film

Client: Newport Corinthians
Content: Promo Video, Unscripted

Client Background

Founded in 1961, Newport Corinthians AFC is one of the largest grassroots football clubs in Newport and among the most established community football clubs in Wales. What began as a team created by founders Alan Merton and Hedley Morgan for friends and family has grown into a thriving football community with over 450 male and female players aged between 6 and 54. Based at Coronation Park in Newport, beneath the iconic Newport Transporter Bridge, the club now supports 28 teams and continues to play a vital role in developing grassroots football opportunities across the city.

Focus Shift Films was commissioned to produce a documentary film celebrating the history, culture and community impact of Newport Corinthians AFC. The aim of the project was to showcase the club’s remarkable journey from its humble beginnings in the 1960s to becoming one of the most successful and respected grassroots football clubs in Wales. The documentary would serve as both a historical record and a powerful promotional asset, helping the club strengthen community engagement, attract new players, connect with supporters and demonstrate its value to potential sponsors and partners.

  • To authentically tell the story of Newport Corinthians AFC, we adopted a long-term documentary approach, filming across a twelve-month period to capture the full life of the football club. This allowed us to document league matches, youth football, club events, community festivals and behind-the-scenes moments that reveal the unique culture of the Corries. By filming throughout the seasons, we were able to showcase the scale of the club’s activities and the important role it plays within the local community, creating a rich and authentic portrait of grassroots football in Newport.

  • Alongside extensive match and event coverage, we combined cinematic drone footage of Coronation Park with interviews from individuals connected to the club. These personal stories brought the club’s history and values to life, highlighting decades of community involvement, volunteer commitment and sporting achievement. By weaving together archival stories, present-day experiences and striking visuals of the club’s home beneath the Newport Transporter Bridge, the final documentary celebrates more than sixty years of football heritage while demonstrating the positive impact community sport can have on generations of players and families.
